XN281 Nepenthes x ((ventricosa x sibyanensis) x ovata

A pitcher on a juvenile plant

Nepenthes x ((ventricosa x sibuyanensis) x ovata)

Catalogue number: XN281

Sex: Unknown

Light: Bright, filtered light.

Preferred temperature range: 15-30° C.
Will tolerate temperatures as low as 5° C if protected from frost.

Potting media:
* coir chip / perlite, or
* sphagnum moss peat / perlite / pine bark (orchid grade)

A very young plant whose potential size is unknown and whose identification is uncertain. It looks very much like Nepenthes x ((ventricosa x sibyanensis) x ovata) juveniles that I’ve seen on the Web, like the Redleaf Exotics EP clone (which has the same colouring and long tendril but stubbier-looking leaf blades).

There is a possibility that it might instead be Nepenthes x (ventricosa-squat x sibuyanensis), or something else altogether. The Redleaf Exotics EP clone appears to have a longer “neck” between the main part of the peristome and the lid, so I think N. x ((vent x sib) x ovata)) is more likely.

Nepenthes ventricosa
Where found: The islands of Luzon, Panay and Sibuyan in the Philippines.

Altitudinal distribution: 1000m to 2000m above sea level (intermediate/highland).

Very closely related to N. sibuyanensis.

Nepenthes sibuyanensis
Where found: Sibuyan Island, Philippines.

Altitudinal distribution: 1200-1800m above sea level
(intermediate/highland).

Nepenthes ovata
Where found: Sumatra, Indonesia

Altitudinal distribution: 1700m to 2100m above sea level
(highland).

This photo was taken in overcast conditions in the very late afternoon, so it looks more yellow than normal. The leaves are actually green with a slight tinge of red.
A closer look at the peristome.
